Text It Blog Hop Day 7

I hope you have found this fun blog hop and are enjoying the projects the other bloggers have shown you from this delightful book.
Sheri Noel who blogs and works as Rebecca Mae Designs has written a fun book with each project having some form of text on it. (All appropriate/necessary patterns included). The book includes a good variety of techniques but is leaning towards applique and English Paper Piecing as opposed to regular piecing. That being said my project is regular piecing with a tiny bit of applique.
Each blogger on this hop is offering a free copy of the book as part of a give away. And as one has come to expect it was only open for US commenters. Sheri however was kind enough to send me a copy of the book for a Canadian only give away. Apparently Canadian rules say you must answer a skill testing question to be eligible for the prize. So if you are Canadian with a Canadian mailing address and would like to enter the draw this is the skill testing question. ( 24/3 + 2) Include the answer in your comment please.
There is a second give away open to anyone and it is for two spools of Aurifil thread.
The draw for both of these prizes will take place on Saturday morning March 16.

Now that the technicalities are over here is my project.
In the book this is a pillow but I made mine into a small quilt. All of my "homes" are black and white except for the one that is really home and it is filled with colour. When my Mom and later my brother were in care facilities I made them small wall hangings that meant something to them to hang on their door or on the wall beside their door. It helped them find their way on a long corridor of doors that all looked the same. My brother preferred the backing I used on his as it had hockey players and Canadian flags but it marked his room. I am not a skilled applique person and found I had a little difficulty making my word home look as neat as I thought it should be so I would call that operator error not designer error.
Please take the time to visit the other bloggers and see their projects and if you are so inclined leave a comment. If you are Canadian, with a Canadian mailing address and want in on the book draw remember the skill testing question needs to be answered. The Aurifil thread part of the draw is open to anyone world wide. Piecefully, Joanne

The giveaway is now closed I am working on notifying the winners, thank you all for playing along.

Turnabout Patchwork, there is something new

By now you may well have seen a few of the fantastic quilts that have been made following the instructions in Teresa's new book Turnabout Patchwork. A few years ago I tested a pattern for her that used the concept she is describing in the book. I will freely admit I do not have good enough spatial sense to do this on my own. But following her directions makes it easy.

I volunteered to do one of the Half Square Triangle projects. My first mistake was when I made the HST's I was not paying enough attention and instead of using the four at a time strategy for making the HST's I used the two at a time. This left me considerably short of the number I required to duplicate the pattern in the book. But my blocks were much bigger so instead of several blocks I created fewer but larger.

This then is a four block Swirl top. It is actually big enough to be a small baby quilt.

I had four blocks left so decided to rearrange them a little and got this.

So you can perhaps see this is a flexible block and a really flexible strategy.

To create the units you need for the block you take your squared up HST and cut it into four equal pieces. Those sub-units are what you play with.

Teresa has kindly offered an e-copy of her book as a draw prize for comments left on various blogs. Please feel free to leave a comment but please with some way of contacting you as I have not heard back from my previous draw winner and will have to move on to person 2 this weekend. Draw for the e-book will be next week, February 9th.

The following is a list of the Blog Hop participants. I suspect you will enjoy having a look at what they have created. Piecefully, Joanne

Back to the Colour Challenge February is PINK

Last year Jen of Patterns by Jen (here) offered a monthly colour challenge. Each month had a designated colour and by visiting her blog you were given freely a 12" block and a 6" block designed for that month and colour.

The plan has changed a little for this year. Only a 12" block is being offered monthly and instead of a repeating group of 6 or 7 bloggers she has opened up the blogging to a wide variety of bloggers. She has also identified a flower that represents the colour for the month. This month's flower is Carnation.

I was doing well last year until I got sick and am hoping I am well enough now to start catching up. but first I will show you my February 2019 PINK block.

Once I had picked out my fabrics this block took less than an hour to assemble. So with a month to do the task you should be good to go. I hope you will join Jen for this monthly challenge. Stop by her blog (here) any time this month to get your copy of this free pattern. and don't forget that towards the end of the month there is a olink up party with a draw prize.  Piecefully, Joanne

Make certain to stop by the other designated bloggers for this month to see how they put together a pink carnation.

Black and White sophistication or just a great combo?

Carla at Creatin' in the Sticks has set up this great Blog Hop to start off the year.

I decided to use one of my test quilt tops for my entry. The quilt pattern I am using is called Modern Churn and was designed by Tammy of Tamarinis Quilts (here). She has kindly offered a paper copy of the pattern to be given out to someone who leaves a comment on this post. I will draw the winners name at noon on Friday January 25th.

I did straight line quilting to finish this off. My stash of black with white and white with black is fairly extensive so used Kona Black for my background and a selection of white with black prints for my "churns"

My finished quilt is a good size. Hubby had to stretch to hold it off the ground.

Please make sure you visit the other bloggers on this hop to see what they have created for the Black and White Blog Hop. And remember to leave a comment if you want to be in the draw for the paper copy of the pattern. Piecefully, Joanne

Finally a New Year and a New Post

To say that the last days of 2018 were difficult would be a mild understatement. I am still recovering and likely will be for a while. My best friend and quilting buddy passed away unexpectedly on December 21st. There is one giant hole in my heart. We first got to know each other as work colleagues and then as friends and finally as quilting buddies.
So while I could not do anything that required focus I did stitch together a couple of quilt tops.

These Half Square Triangles have been lurking in the sewing room for sew long I can barely remember the original quilt they came from. The dark is a navy blue cotton and the prints are from drapery sample books that were given to our Scrapbag Quilters group. The samples were 100% cotton so I washed them and then used them. This quilt top is roughly 39" square. For my quilt guild this year I am doing a program I call Totally Triangular. Each month I am showing something different do to with those lovely waste/bonus triangles we all seem to have. Or at least some of us have. I am hoping to get back on track soon and to be posting more regularly. Piecefully, Joanne

A busy week with lots happening

As my subject lines says it has been a busy week with lots of different events. I started the week as the guest speaker for the Bluewater Quilters Guild monthly meeting. I spoke about Pattern Testing and my journey to becoming a quilt pattern tester. It was the first time I had been a Guild speaker. Hubby was worried about me driving there at night so he drove me there and read a book while I did my presentation.
The rest of the week was eating cautiously and then prepping for Friday's colonoscopy. So I spent time stitching scraps together as that does not require the attention to detail that pattern testing requires.

This is one little project I got assembled this week. I cut the bars out this summer while the work table was set up in the garage. Smoky pinks and olive greens. Over a period of time I made small rail blocks out of them. Each block here is 1 1/2" x 3 1/2". then stitched a pair together and then made a four together unit. I thought it wouldn't make a very big quilt and recalled hearing that setting them on point extends the size. Went on line found out about the Math for the setting and corner triangles and here it is.
Today we are heading to a Festive Brunch. We purchased this "event" with our neighbours at the local Rotary Charity Auction. We each invited another couple so there will be 8 of us for brunch.
Hope to be back to regular stitching in the week ahead. Piecefully, Joanne
